Reading Response To A Book I Read Over The Summer
Over the summer I read the book, Say What You Will, by Cammie McGovern. Say What You Will was a heartfelt book and the message that the author was trying to send was that it's okay to be different.
For example, the main character, Amy has a disorder that makes it impossible for her to move her body or speak. She communicates through a computer program and has a wheelchair. She struggles to find friends in high school with her condition and genius smarts holding her back. Then she meets Matt another teenager that is seen as a social outcast due to his OCD. The two find comfort in each other and face the hardships of college and life together. The author was trying to tell us that it's okay to be different because she showed Amy and Matt sticking up for themselves when they were being attacked due to their differences.
Another example of this message occurring throughout the book is when the main characters are applying to college. The feeling of stress is ubiquitous and Matt is having difficulty finding out what college is right for him. He instead pretends to be someone else when applying and then he realizes who he is and finds a program that fits like a glove. This makes me think that if you try and be someone else you will regret it because when you accomplish things when you are your true self it makes the accomplishment more meaningful.
The overall message of this book makes me think that people with similar problems can benefit one and another to conquer them. Matt and Amy came together and transformed as characters by the end of the book.
